The course treats philosophy as a personal and practical attitude to life which gradually leads to a direct understanding of such universal philosophical questions as: Who am I? Where have I come from? What is my relationship with the universe?
Throughout history philosophers all over the world have explored these issues to provide real and practical answers that work today. However the course places great emphasis on learning from personal experience derived from putting the universal principles into practice. For example having heard about and discussed in group what constitutes wisdom, the barriers to wisdom and the importance of stillness, students are encouraged to practice whatever is recalled and discuss in group their experience in subsequent weeks.
No special qualifications are therefore required from those wishing to attend.
Philosophy Foundation courses are offered three times a year lasting for 11 weeks starting in January, April and September. They are held on a Tuesday evening from 7.30 p.m. to 9.45 p.m., with a break for refreshments. This module consists of 4 courses which are offered in rotation. New students will join existing students who have been attending for one or more terms. In their fifth term students can transfer to the Way of Philosophy module and be offered the opportunity to take up the practice of Meditation.
